“The Covenant House Vancouver exists for those whom there is often no one else — young people [without shelter] who have fled physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse, those who have been forced from their homes.

We bandage their cut-up feet from days and nights walking the streets; give them hot food and a warm bed and support them in their choice to change their present circumstances while helping them heal from past traumas.
Research indicates that most people understand that our youth are coming from troubled backgrounds. That being said, there is a stigma associated with mental illness, a disease of which over half our young people suffer. Likewise, being homeless has a stigma that implies the youth are lazy or incapable of providing for themselves.
More often than not, their homelessness or poor living situation is the result of them having fled an abusive situation or having "aged out" of the foster care and having no viable alternative to living on the streets.

In response to the enormity and severity of the issues facing our youth, Covenant House has developed three core services (Community Support Services, which provides street outreach and a daily, non-residential, drop-in program; a 54 bed-, 24-hour crisis shelter; and Rights of Passage, a 6- 24 months transitional living program). These core services are supported by several in-house programs (drug and alcohol and mental health counselling, life-skills training etc.) designed to provide each young person with a "one-stop shop" approach to leaving the streets and achieving independence.”
